The XXX international symposium in Applied linguistics organized by the Master in Applied Linguistics to the Teaching of English Language (MLAEI, from its Spanish initials ) of Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas invites the audience this year to attend and explore insights in this year's the topic:

Applied linguistics in language education in a world of multilingual and multicultural practices: critical and decolonial perspectives

The field of English teaching, as it intersects with applied linguistics, plays a crucial role in navigating the complexities of language education, and more, in a world characterized by multilingual and multicultural practices. In our field in Colombia several language education actors have now recognized that English language education has been shaped by monolingual ideologies and colonial legacies that prioritize standard English as the norm, often at the expense of other languages and cultural practices. From this angle, we advocate for critical and decolonial perspectives to challenge these conventions for  more inclusive approaches that recognize and value the diverse linguistic repertoires and cultural backgrounds of learners. We consider that by integrating these perspectives, the English teaching field can contribute to a more equitable and socially just form of language education that is responsive to the needs of a diverse student population.

In this line of thought, adopting critical and decolonial perspectives in the English teaching field necessitates a re-examination of pedagogical practices, curriculum design and general education. It involves questioning the dominance of Western-centric models of language proficiency embracing  plurilingual approaches that acknowledge the legitimacy of multiple Englishes and other languages spoken by learners. Therefore, we believe this shift requires educators to not only teach English but also to foster an environment where different languages and cultures are respected and seen as valuable resources in the pedagogical processes. In doing so, this symposium proposes to look at the field of English teaching to move beyond simply imparting linguistic skills and towards empowering learners and teachers to navigate and thrive in a multilingual and multicultural world.
